Chalazion (Eyelid Cyst)

A chalazion, also commonly known as a lid cyst or meibomian cyst, is a slowly enlarging nodule in the eyelid. They are formed by blockage of the meibomian glands that produce an oily substance present in tears. Meibomian cysts are not harmful to the eye and will not cause any damage to your eyesight. However, swelling of the eyelid or watering can cause temporary blurring of vision.

There are a number of conditions that fall under the category of minor operations. They are usually referred to as ‘lumps and bumps’ and are surgically removable if they fail to resolve themselves.

Some chalazia will resolve spontaneously, a process that can take between weeks and months. However, if it does not resolve a minor surgical procedure may be considered if they become unsightly or cause impaired vision, discomfort, or become inflamed and painful, due to infection.

Patients may seek medical attention when a chalazion becomes unsightly or causes impaired vision, discomfort, or becomes inflamed and painful, due to infection.

Risks of  surgery
All surgery carries some uncertainty and risk
When eyelid surgery is performed by a qualified oculoplastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. Nevertheless, there is always a possibility of complications, including infection or a reaction to the anaesthesia.

Your surgeon will provide you more detailed information based on your specific requirements.

Preparing for surgery
Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications.

Types of anaesthesia
The majority of minor operations are performed under local anaesthetic.

The surgery
The eyelid will be everted and a small incision is then made inside the eyelid so that no visible scar is seen. The contents of the cyst are removed. A pad is placed over the eye.

After surgery
Following surgery the amount of swelling and bruising will depend on the size and number of lesions. We would recommend you take 2 - 3 days off work to aid your speedy recovery.

You will be required to instill eye drops for a few days to aid recovery and prevent infection. You should avoid wearing make up until the wound has healed.

Getting back to normal
The recovery time is relatively short and you should be able to resume all normal activities within 2 - 3 days.
